Cabinet approves another water transfer for Alicante and Murcia

Heavy rainfall has had little effect on the resources of these drought-stricken areas

The Cabinet meeting last Friday has approved another water transfer on the Tajo-Segura pipeline: 69 cubic hectometres between October and December.

EFE says it will be split up into 23 hectometres a month, with more than half to go on guaranteeing drinking water supply to 2.5 million people in 79 municipalities in Alicante, Murcia, Albacete and a part of Almería province.

The remainder is destined for irrigation.

The recent heavy rains and flooding has had little effect on the water resources of these drought-affected areas.
