The Pico de Fogo volcano rises over 1700 metres from the Cha das Caldeiras, an area formed from old lava flows. The scenery is impressive: dark rocks and black sands give an impression of a lunar landscape. This is where the famous Fogo wine is produced which we highly recommend. Sao Filipe, the capital is a pretty town with colonial pastel shaded buildings providing a complete contrast to the rest of the island.
