Sofia has been Bulgaria's capital since 1879 and is 492.029 km2 in size and inhabited by 1.22 million people. Today it is a rapidly growing modern city with many trade centres, industries and sightseeing attractions. It is the cultural centre of the country and is surrounded by the Balkan Mountains to the north, the Lozen Mountain to the south-east, Vitosha Mountain to the south and the Lyulin Mountain to the south-west.

Charter flights are available from the majority of UK airports and the flight time is approximately 3 hours. Sofia has an International Airport which is only 10km east of the city centre and the easiest way of travelling there is by tram. A shuttle bus service also operates on a regular basis and taxis are readily available.

Like the rest of the country, Sofia has a long and varied History and the city has had numerous names. During the 8th century the city was named Serdica, under the Roman Empire it was named Sredets, under Byzantine rule is was re-named Triyaditsa and when the city was liberated it was named Sophia.

Today Sofia is going through major changes and there are a lot of modern buildings being constructed in order to keep up with demand. Also a brand new underground connects the city centre with the outskirts. There are plenty of luxurious hotels for visitors and business travellers, restaurants serving traditional and modern cuisine, shopping malls and many places for entertainment. A variety of modern business centres and shopping malls are being built along the big boulevards, like Tsarigradsko Shousse and Nikola Vaptsarov Blvd. The region of Todor Aleksandrov Blve. serves as an administrative complex and business park of the city.

For the visitor there is plenty to see and do, there are numerous museums, galleries and theatres. Some of these include the National Museum of History, the Bulgarian Natural History Museum, the Museum of Earth and Men, the Ethnographic Museum, the National Museum of Military History and the National Archaeological Museum. For the art lover, there are plenty of art galleries to visit.

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Sofia is the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral, which houses a collection of more than 200 Bulgarian icon paintings. Visitors can also view the Church belfry which is 50.52 metres high. Other landmarks include the Parliament building and the impressive building of St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University. Another historical landmark is the Roman red brick rotunda, now called St. George Church, which is considered to be one of the oldest buildings in Sofia. In addition to many of the buildings, Sofia also has some beautiful bridges.

In the evening, Sofia has everything you would expect from a Capital City. Along the streets of Graf Ignatieff, Rakovski, and Vitosha Boulevard there are numerous shops, luxury boutiques, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs.

Sofia has many green areas to relax in, however you want to get out of the city the Vitosha Natural Park is very close and an ideal place for relaxation. There are ten peaks over 2000 metres high and offer trekking, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, alpinism, paraplanerism, cave and speleological tourism.

Sofia is a beautiful capital city and since joining the EU expansion is set to continue, creating more demand for property.
