Bulgaria is a small country and occupies an area of 110 993 sq km, with a population of 7.93 million. Bulgaria has an interesting ancient culture, beautiful scenery and friendly people who are very welcoming. The country is situated in south-eastern Europe and occupies the central part of the Balkan Peninsula, the northern area of Bulgaria borders Romania and passes along the Danube and the eastern area border the Black Sea. Macedonia borders the west and Turkey to the south-east and Greece to the south.

Bulgaria also has numerous evidences of prehistoric life and prehistoric man found the conditions suitable to settle, leaving a considerable amount of cultural heritage. Later the highly developed Thracians inhabited the land, they were brave and fearless and hired as warriors for the armies in Ancient Greece. They were also gladiators in Rome and one of them was the famous Spartacus who led a big uprising of slaves in 74-71 BC. Their rich and fertile lands were the envy of the Greeks and eventually they established colonies along the Black Sea Coast. During the 1 st Century AD the Roman Empire took over the lands and significantly increased the number of cities and fortresses and also improved the economic development. They combined the talent of the natives and the knowledge of their architects, builders, sculptors, craftsmen and introduced improved education, theatre, music, poetry, sports games and the arts.
There are so many sights to see in Bulgaria but the most important attractions must be the landmarks that are in the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage list. There is certainly many to choose from and they are located all over Bulgaria. Some of the landmarks include the Kazanluk Tomb which is a Thracian tomb dated to the late 4 th early 3 rd century B.C. The Ivanovo Rock Churches, a rock monastery built in the rocks of the Rousenski Lom Nature Park. The Boyana Church, which as unique murals from 1259 and is located about 8k, from Sofia. The Rila Monastery is the most impressive monastery found in Bulgaria and is a spiritual centre of the Bulgarian people. Located in the resort of the Black Sea is the old part of the town Nessebur, it is an architectural, historical and archaeological reserve with valuable archaeological relics from different periods, original churches from the 5 th to the 17 th century and authentic National Revival Period houses.
Bulgaria offers a fantastic combination of beautiful sunny beaches in the Black Sea Resorts and snowy mountainous winter resorts. The beach resorts of Sunny Beach and Golden Sands have stunning stretches of sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, for decades they have been the most popular and visited Bulgarian destination. The Black Sea resorts have over 380km of beaches an average daily temperature of 27 degrees with approximately 1,700 hours of sunshine from May through to September. The mountain resort of Bansko is one the newest and most modern winter resorts and located in the south-west of Bulgaria, in the foothills of one of the most beautiful Bulgarian mountains called Pirin. This area is included in the World Natural Heritage list. The skiing season along the Pirin slopes starts in the middle of December and ends in mid-April and attracts skiers and snowboarders from all over the world. The other winter resort of Pamporovo is the sunniest skiing resort in Europe and also offers some fantastic skiing opportunities. With mild winters and clear blue sunny skies it is a firm favourite.
